Fisherman’s Bastion is a fairy tale. Walking up the steps at Jezsuita lépcső you feel as if you are entering Narnia, or a place that one could only dream of. Your expectation begins to increase at each step. As you go higher and higher passing the alluring black lampposts, you begin to see the tip of this stunning architectural marvel. Continuing on, the steps take you through an enchanting brick tunnel, which then leads you out into a beguiling courtyard that encompasses Fisherman’s Bastion, the Statue of St. Stephen, and Matthias Church, also known as Castle Hill.
Time for some history!
Fisherman’s Bastion was built between 1895 and 1902. The architectural style was inspired by the early medieval times featuring 7 towers to represent the 7 Hungarian chieftains who led their tribes to what is now present day Hungary to settle down in 895. While the Statue of St Stephen, built in 1906, commemorates the first Hungarian king (1000-1038). Fisherman’s Bastion is an iconic historical monument.

I begin to imagine the history here. How this city, these monuments, and the people have endured so much not just over years, but decades and centuries. There is a depth here that I haven’t experienced anywhere else. I am filled with gratitude to have walked where so many have walked before me, stepping through time, taking moments to pause and remember.
