Time Travel

Ferin Bookstore - Lisbon, Portugal

Have you ever wanted to travel in time to Paris in the roaring twenties or the beautiful rolling green hills of the English countryside in the 19th century (where are all my Jane Austen fans at?!)?

Wherever you have wanted to go and whichever time period that may be, historical fiction novels transport us to different eras and we can also experience different time periods when we travel as well.

HOW is that possible (you might be asking yourself)?”

Historical Fiction is my favorite genre, not just because I have a love of history, but because I’m reading stories based on true events, which provides more depth and meaning for me, allowing me to truly escape into the story at hand. I feel like I am actually a part of it because it’s become real for me. It also allows me to view my life and this current time with a new perspective. Within this genre, I specifically love to find stories around the WWII time period (you’ll notice from my book review posts).

You might be thinking - war, the Holocaust, and all that comes with just those two topics alone - why would you want to read those stories in your free time? It’s not history class!

Good question! At the heart of these stories (and I’ve read many!), there are themes of hope, courage, strength, overcoming challenges and adversity, and much more. When I say these books give me a new perspective on my own life - that’s TRUTH! Yes, it’s a different time period and I’m not faced with the same circumstances, but it allows me to reassess the things in my life I view as big problems or challenges, and if it is actually as big and challenging as I think it is.

Now that you know my reasoning behind my love of historical fiction, back to the topic at hand - time travel!

Obviously we cannot just enter some time travel machine or go into a quiet solitary place, close our eyes, think of the time and place and magically appear there (for any About Time lovers), even though how cool would that be?! BUT we can open a historical fiction novel and embrace the story, the characters, the time period through the author’s meticulous research and engaging storytelling and be transported through our imagination. Some of my favorite books and good examples of this are:

All The Light We Cannot See

The Nightingale

Good Night, Irene

The Air Raid Book Club

The Ragged Edge of Night

Beneath a Scarlet Sky

I have a whole list I’m eager to share with you - stayed tuned for the book reviews!

Just as we can be transported in time through a book, we can be transported in time currently when we travel. Yes, it’s TRUE! We can transport in time through our travels now!

Whether it’s through a special historical tour of the city or place you’re traveling to, checking out different museums, monuments, or famous historical sites on your own, eating the traditional food, or attending operas or concerts in that country or region’s traditional music (Fado in Portugal or some Scottish folk music anyone?!), you can be transported back in time getting to experience a piece of history wherever in the world you find yourself. If you are looking for a culturally immersive, historical experience when you travel, highly recommend you do some research of the place you’re going to set you up for a grand experience!

So, dear discoverer, if you do decide to embark on a historical journey whether through a book or travel, feel free to reach out with any questions along the way. Here to fully support your future adventures and time travel expeditions!

Much love,
