The Art of Travel: Edinburgh

National Galleries of Scotland - Edinburgh, Scotland

Who is ready for some Scottish art?!

The National Galleries of Scotland provide an exquisite display for all to view (the museum is also free for everyone to attend).

Edinburgh is a beautiful city filled with so much history and culture especially around the literary scene. Prior to visiting, my knowledge of Scottish art was, I’m sorry to say, little to none. However, walking through the city for the first time and admiring the magnificent buildings and landscapes, felt as if I was walking through a painting itself. Edinburgh is truly one of the most stunning cities I have ever been.

Upon arriving to the National Galleries, which is centrally located, you come to a captivating view of the city in an area called The Mound. On this day, birds glided above while the sun was peeking through the clouds, rays reaching out to touch this charming city - it was majestic. In the background was an opera performer singing songs from Les Misérables, which made the whole scene that much more moving.

Entering the galleries, you will be drawn in to the bold red walls, which set a backdrop highlighting the art. There are works by renowned artists such as Da Vinci, Raphael, Rembrandt to Van Gogh, Monet, Picasso, Cézanne, and many more. As much as I love (and will never get tired of!) these notable works, some of the most fascinating pieces were displayed by Scottish artists.

Checkout some of my favorite pieces:

Reverend Robert Walker Skating on Duddingston Loch by Sir Henry Raeburn

Wandering Shadows by Peter Graham

The Storm by William McTaggart

A Hind's Daughter by Sir James Guthrie

A Distant View of Stirling by Alexander Nasmyth

Highland Landscape with a Waterfall by Horatio McCulloch

Pitlessie Fair by Sir David Wilkie

Fleet Bay, Kirkcudbrightshire by Eric Harald Macbeth Robertson

Barr, Ayrshire by George Henry

Stobo Kirk by James McIntosh Patrick

Art brings history to life and after viewing these pieces, I felt even more immersed in the Scottish culture making the rest of my Edinburgh experience that much richer.

So, dear discoverer, I hope you enjoy this journey through Scotland by viewing these pieces, maybe meeting some new artists, and feeling inspired to adventure to this enchanting city or venturing out into the breathtaking Scottish highlands. A world of adventure awaits!

Much love,
