The Art of Travel: Vienna
A city where art is immersed in the culture, Vienna will captivate you!
One of the most stunning art galleries (which - BONUS! - is located in a palace) is housed in the Belvedere.
As you may know from my posts, I enjoy learning and reading about European history, specifically during WWII. During this time, the Nazis stole and burned many works of art, but luckily, there were original works from prominent artists that were saved. Prior to visiting Vienna, I lived in New York City and visited the Neue Galerie, viewing first-hand Gustav Klimt’s Portrait of Adele Bloch Bauer I also known as The Woman in Gold (there was a movie made about this painting in case you’d rather watch than research). Standing in front of this original work by Klimt during his “golden style”, I was in awe. This painting is timeless in beauty and has a history that represents perseverance and justice. Adele Bloch-Bauer was the wife of a wealthy Jewish industrialist, Ferdinand Bloch-Bauer. In 1938, this portrait was one of five Klimt paintings seized by the Nazis from the Bloch-Bauer home. For decades, this masterpiece was displayed in Vienna where it was renamed "Woman in Gold" to conceal Adele’s identity. Her surviving heir, Maria Altmann, fought for the return of her family's property. In 2005, a panel hearing before the United States Supreme Court determined that the paintings were to be restored to the heirs. This was a landmark restitution case.
Bringing it back to Vienna! A couple weeks before our arrival, Klimt’s Portrait of Adele Bloch Bauer II was on special exhibit. This was such a special treat to see in person. I learned that this painting was the first in Klimt’s new creative phase, shifting away from gold to vibrant colors, which was inspired by the contemporary art he studied on a trip to Paris.
Beyond this special portrait, the Belvedere has an enchanting collection of Klimt’s work, including The Kiss, which is the most famous Austrian painting. This gallery also houses other notable artists such as Monet, Van Gogh, Renoir, Munch, Manet, and many more. Walking through this alluring palace, you will be transported through history, embraced in a real-life fairy tale (especially as you explore the surrounding gardens). There is a wealth of discovery to be had at the Belvedere!
So, dear discoverer, if you’re looking for an artful oasis, head to Vienna, take a journey through some of the cities finest art galleries and walk through the charming streets where the architecture truly brings art to life. For any Vienna travel tips or recommendations, feel free to connect!
